St Mary Coslany Church, Norwich
St Mary Coslany, Norwich has an Anglo-Saxon round tower, while its main body dates from the late 15th century. From the 16th to 19th centuries, the church suffered greatly from floods. In 1762 many precious books and manuscripts were destroyed when the church was 3 feet deep in water. The church was restored between 1857 and 1869 but by 1904 the tower had fallen down. In 1908 damaged parts of the tower were rebuilt and new windows inserted. In 1942 the district was bombed and part of the roof was reduced to a mass of charred timbers but once again it was restored. Luke Hansard, who started the eponymous Parliamentary record, was baptised there, and so was Norwich School painter John Sell Cotman, while fellow painter John Crome was married there in 1792. |
